This question comes to me from Kevin at the Atlanta 2018 Teach Them Diligently Homeschool Conference. This is also the question that allowed Kevin to win the poplar bowl. So, let’s get into to this terrifying question.
At the beginning of becoming a homeschooling dad, I knew nothing about homeschooling! Now the wife was the one with the research, the asking, the education in education, the desire, and want to do this. I was merely the finical representative. I was completely unaware of what or how to do anything. Now, I don’t know if most guys out there are good with doing something that will shape their kid’s life and not having the understanding of what they are doing; but I was completely and utterly terrified.
I am an engineer, I have a plan, I have specifications, I have instructions. In homeschooling, those things are not always there. The task can be a fluid, moving and constantly changing target that you are attempting to hit. That is where I struggled and was so scared of failing my kids.
But let me reassure you that you can do it! You just have to step out there Kevin! Get ready to face the unknown, the skeptics, the “What the heck do we do now?” moments and go for the ride. This is a time where you and your kids will grow together and they will see the success and failure that comes with being a dad of a homeschooling mom. Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t be afraid to not know what to do. Take the time and learn with your kids! Who knows, you may be teaching the next President of the United States through 9th-grade calculus while learning it yourself.
Lastly, let me leave you with this thought. The most terrifying part that I can really think of is having the opportunity to teach my child, and looking back in a few years and knowing I did not. Embrace it Kevin and have fun!
Till next time….
I’m just a husband of a homeschooling mom,
