Happy Birthday Daddy!

Today is a special day to me. If it was not for this day coming around some 59 years ago, I would not be here. Today is the 59th birthday of my daddy, Rusty Blackston.

Let me tell you a bit about my daddy (which I pronounce deddy).  At the age of 17 he was thrown into the role of fatherhood.  Working at the Thomaston Mill, he did what he could to provide for his family.  As time went along he change jobs from the RC delivery man, Tom’s delivery man, Norfork Southern Railway, Thomaston Fire Department, to his most loved job of Farmer.  Through out all of those moves he still did what he could to be daddy.  Somewhere in the middle of all this, he went through a divorce and got remarried to a great lady who I also call mom.

My daddy was there to support me when I played with the Sonic Giants, he tied me into tree stands when we hunted together, he showed me how to bait a hook, he taught me how to drive in the hay field, he was there when I was on the Upson High Armed Drill Team, he co-signed with me for my first truck, he went with me to look at my first college and he returned to help me pack up when I got kicked out.  (Want to talk about a long ride there and back!)  He was also there when I did graduate from Southern Tech, he stood beside me as my best man at my wedding.  The two of us have not always agreed on everything but he has always been there to talk to when I needed him.  He has stood back and let me fall only to teach me a lesson that I could not learn any other way.  Now that I have my own kids, I see how hard that was.

He is a man who is hard-headed, stubborn and irritable at times (at least I know who I get it from).  Yet he is a man who is kind, caring, thoughtful, loving, God fearing and who I respect as a man.  He is a man who has taught me about honesty, work ethic and that sweat will not kill you, but make you stronger.  We are both busy people who don’t really spend enough time with each other.  But on this day I wanted to take a few moments to let you, Russell Morgan Blackston, know that you are loved by your son.

Happy Birthday Daddy!
