Guys I am asking you a poignant question today, “Are you equipped?” I asked a question to my iPhone today and the answer that came back was “I am sorry Steve, I am not equipped to answer that question.” Which brings up a great question to us as dads, “Are we equipped to answer the questions of our kids?”
The biggest question in seeing if you are equipped is to understand what is needed in order to be equipped! Kids will come at you with hundreds of questions and approach at different degrees of importance. The ability to answer those questions depends on your knowledge. Now when asked what is a good thing to know, my first thought is the Bible. When saying this of course some people will say “What? I got to know the whole thing from front to back?” If so, then I am a failure at knowing all there is in the Bible. But I do know this part, which to me is very important.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,
17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Are you equipped to lead?
For me to be equipped, I need to know scripture and where to find the scripture. But why do I need the scripture? You need the scripture to teach, rebuke, to correct and to train in righteousness. That is a powerful list of things guys! If you look at that list, that should be our daily life with our kids, should it not? We should be teaching our kids, rebuking the things they do wrong and correcting them in accordance with God’s word. Lastly, we should be training our kids each and every day in the ways that are pleasing to God. In a nutshell, we should be leading them. Not sitting back waiting for problems to happen or watching them fail. Also notice that none of this states that we are to belittle or berate our kids, bash them in front of others, or tear them down. We should teach, rebuke, correct and train in righteousness.
If we do these things guys, we, the man of God, may be complete, equipped for every good work! Did you just get that? Equipped! “so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Yet, to be at this point, we as the men of our household need to be ready. We need to be grounded in God’s word, reading it, and searching it. In doing so, we would be equipped and able to lead our family. Not only that, you would be smarter than my iPhone!
